3 hour Workshop

Date: 7 December, 2023

Location: ONLINE

Workshop times:

Start: 5 p.m.

Finish: 8 p.m.

Workshop Description

This taster workshop is an experiential introduction to exploring and deepening our
Compassionate minds, using writing and creative approaches. Compassionate letter writing
is a well-established tool in CFT, helping clients to connect to their compassionate self and
respond to their experiences.

The workshop will offer participants an opportunity to get a taste of compassionate self-enquiry using Compassion Focused writing to explore key aspects of compassion, including the flows of compassion and our 3 emotional systems. We will utilise objects, pens, pencils, and any other creative materials people choose, to playfully explore the material and become more familiar with our compassionate minds. In experiencing methods such as free writing, participants have an opportunity to deepen their connection to their compassionate wisdom and work with their inner censor.

A study by Gale, Schröder and Gilbert (2017) highlighted how personal practice can increase practitioners’ understanding and confidence in CFT and improve approaches to client work.
This is an opportunity for participants to take time for themselves and focus on their own
well-being, to connect with others in group reflection and to deepen their range of creative
approaches with clients and supervisees. Participants will take away resources for
continuing the connection with their Compassionate Minds.

This workshop will assume some knowledge of the fundamentals of CFT, therefore is
suitable for those with an awareness of CFT basics. Following on from this taster, there will
be further workshops next year for a deeper dive into Compassion Focused writing and
creative methods.

Presenter:

Kate is a Compassion Focused Therapist and supervisor and EMDR practitioner working in
the South West of England and remotely. Kate spreads their time working with young
people and adults, both in their independent practice Compassionate Space and with the
Irish Centre for Compassion Focused Therapy (ICCFT). Kate has been practicing using CFT
since 2014, completing the Post Graduate Certificate in CFT in 2018. Kate works largely with
those who have experienced developmental and complex trauma, bringing a Compassion
Focused lens to previous practice in CAMHS and specialist bereavement work and currently
in private practice with adolescents and adults.
Kate has supported staff teams using Compassion Focused Staff Support, delivered
individual CMT and designed and delivered CMT groups for teens and adults. Kate is
experienced and enthusiastic about using writing and other creative and action methods to
her work and personal life. Kate has been practicing expressive writing in the form of
journaling, autobiographical and creative writing from a young age and latterly more
formally with writing courses in Therapeutic writing and writing workshops. In incorporating
writing, action methods and other creativity into her work, Kate has noticed a deepening of
compassion focused exploration and self-discovery that is not always accessible through
verbal communication.
